Well it’s official…CityVille for Dummies has been released! Well it was released about a week ago but I was waiting for something extra special to be able to offer ya’ll. If you click here you can get a sample chapter that I wrote. I went to Barnes and Noble the other day and of course I had to see if it was on the shelves and sure enough…it was! Now THAT was an exciting day for me! I think the workers thought I was a little crazy for showing such interest in the book (I mean I was just ecstatic haha!) but that’s ok. I chickened out on telling them that I was the co-author so I had every right to be a little weird when it came to seeing it on the shelves. Here’s me: Once you download the free chapter and read through it and decide that you just have to own this wonderful specimen of writing, you can purchase it from your neighborhood bookstore or at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Oh and keep checking the NY Times Bestseller list!

So I have some exciting news! Last week I was asked to be a co-author on the upcoming “CityVille for Dummies” book! The release date is TBD but you can be sure I’ll keep ya’ll updated! I’m VERY excited and honored for them to even consider me to be “author material.” I’ve worked with Wiley as a technical editor on a bunch of books and all of the people involved with these projects are great! Now get your be-hinds over to CityVille so we can be neighbors!

My husband Jeff is a finance professor at a local university and he happens to be off from school for the next SIX weeks. Yes, believe me, I was thinking the same thing! This wouldn’t be an issue except for the fact that his office is directly across the hall from mine at our house. When he’s at school that’s not a problem, of course. But now that he’s home, I’m finding myself being seriously distracted by his movements and sounds. Typically I close the door (which makes for an even bigger distraction because our dog Simon can’t decided if he wants in or out), but yesterday Jeff was listening to a podcast and had the volume up really (really) high. So loud, in fact, that I could clearly hear the words of the podcast through my shut door. Then I remembered a little tool I have in my office that I sometimes forget about until I’m faced with an issue like this…a white noise machine. Well, it’s not a “true” white noise machine. It’s actually a $9.95 clock radio I got from the drugstore one day, but one of the wake up options is white noise. For those of you that aren’t familiar with the sound, it basically sounds like static or maybe even the rushing rapids of a river. The fact of the matter is, it drowns out other noises…people on the phone, barking dogs, honking horns….a podcast being played really loudly…. So if you find that your [...]

Recently I noticed my productivity was slowing and stopping altogether at times. Not good! I was speaking with a good friend of mine and mentioned this and she asked me to describe my office, including my desk. I told her how it's laid out and sheepishly admitted to being a "piler" and those piles just so happened to be on my desk. I also admitted that the top of my desk contained some hair ties, a new bottle of shampoo, recently cut coupons, lotion, incoming bills...you get the idea. The main theme is that none of these have anything to do with the WORK that is supposed to be taking place at this desk. Because all of this junk is there taking up space, of course I'm not finding the "time" or motivation to get anything done! I can't even put the shampoo in the closet for goodness sake! Not being able to see the actual desktop was tricking my mind into not seeing this as a workspace in general.

Take up a different creative hobby. It doesn’t matter what kind of writing you do, it all requires at least some basic level of creativity. Consider taking up another creativity-focused hobby, whether it’d be photography, ceramics or even whittling. Okay so that last one was a bit of a joke but hey, to each his own! Doing this accomplishes two things: it gets your mind off of any writing-related “hang-ups” you may be experiencing at the moment and it gets the “creative juices” flowing in a different direction, something that can lead to better ideas and improved work flow. Like those Mentos commercials used to say- “It’s the fresh maker!”

Keep a journal and write in it daily. It doesn’t really matter what you write. It could be the mundane day-to-day happenings of your life or notes about upcoming projects or things you want to improve upon. The idea is that taking the time to write without constraints will help you develop your unique voice which, in turn, will help you in those times when a project DOES have constraints. We all have those now and again, now don’t we?

As many of you know, I am currently enrolled in the Master of Business Communication program at the University of St. Thomas here in MN. One of the required classes is Communication Law. As an undergrad Journalism/Mass Communication student at St. Bonaventure University (NY), I had to take a similar course called Media Law. At least I thought there were going to be similar. That class was mainly about historical cases (I mean historical, as in Brown v. Board of Education) that played a part in shaping journalism as a whole. This class is more about how communication law stands today and some of the more popular cases that have shaped it. The moral of this story is that I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I didn’t know that the First Amendment is in fact, not absolute protection when it comes to free speech. It’s actually fairly narrow and limited. We’re learning about Intellectual Property rights and trademarks and defamation (don’t look at someone cross-eyed!). Interestingly enough, we learned that the “McDonalds Coffee Case” was not fully reported and the media handled it irresponsibly in the interest of having a sensational story. The woman at the center of it had 3rd degree burns that required extensive surgery and just asked McD to pay her $10k in medical bills and they offered her $800. My advice for all of the media people out there? Educate yourself on what you can and can’t do and what you can and can’t say. Know your rights as [...]
